In 1977 the Georgia General Assembly created the Georgia Council on Aging to advise state government on issues facing older Georgians. Over those 40 years the council has worked with its Coalition of Advocates for Georgia's Elderly to improve the lives of older Georgians.

Along with Governor Deal, three other officials appoint members to the Georgia Council on Aging: the Lieutenant Governor, Speaker of the House, and Commissioner of Department of Human Services.
