Office Location
The Georgia Council on Aging is located at 2 Peachtree Street, N.W., Atlanta, GA 30303-3142. The building is on the corner of Peachtree Street and Marietta Blvd. diagonally across from Woodruff Park. Adjacent to the building is the 5 Points Marta Station where north/south and east/west MARTA lines converge.
Duties
The intern will be heavily involved in some or all of the following: preparing fact sheets, brochures and other educational or training materials, coordinating meetings and training sessions, attending legislative meetings and monitoring legislation, participating in staff and Council meetings, and updating and maintaining databases.
Desired Qualifications
The Council prefers students with some experience in aging and/or human services. The ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing, are critical skills. Initiative, ability to research issues and work as a team, good judgment and decision making skills are necessary assets as well.
The preparation of fact sheets and educational documents requires keen attention to accuracy and to implication, and contributes to the credibility of issues and the Council's position. It may be helpful for interns to know that all research projects and other tasks requiring publication of materials undergo rigorous scrutiny.
Time Requirements
Internships are 20-40 hours per week. Students for less than 20 hours per week are not acceptable, except as volunteers for special projects that do not qualify as internship. Starting and ending dates are somewhat flexible.
The Council has had interns from Baylor University, Georgia State University, Spelman College and the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, among others. Internships are not paid by the Council. However, interns have been placed with the Council through the Governors Intern Program and those interns have received compensation through that program. Advocacy Alert Tree
CO-AGE Advocacy Alert TreeThe Georgia Council on Aging (GCoA) sends out a few, select and timely alerts to an established email list especially during the legislative session. This list, the roots of GCoA's "Advocacy Alert Tree", engages volunteers to forward these important messages along to other advocates and interested people. There is strength in numbers and our success lies in the number of constituents who are passing along these alerts to others in their own communities and networks.
Alert Tree volunteers may also be asked to call a list of legislators to take a stand on active issues that are important to Georgia's aging network. Legislative bills are won or lost by engagement and participation. Keeping our issues in front of our lawmakers and encouraging others to do the same is crucial.
Sign up for the Alert Tree so you will receive advocacy alerts by filling out the information form at the bottom of this page. You may also contact us by phone or email, and we will fax or mail the form to you.
We hope you will consider joining the GCoA Advocacy Alert Tree!
